Post by mama anne » Tue Nov 28, 2006 1:35 pm

hey ladies
i've been trying to work on my own patterns .... and also have been using different ply wool to what some patterns suggest  ...... so i have a variety of different sized soakers and longies!!

just wondering if anyone has a definitive list of waist/rise measurements for soakers and waist/rise/leg measurements for longies.
or if anyone's willing to measure any they've made/bought that they know what size they are .... [-o<

I'll make it easy for you, just cut and paste

oh, this is a great question! The answers should be quite a useful resource :D

I just measured the longies I made for DD - they fit her at 5 months with room to grow so are small size I think:

waist: 40cm
rise: 44cm
leg: 17cm from crotch, 36cm from waist

And her soaker measurement is:
waist: 39cm
rise: 44cm

My longies are all crotcheted. i have started writing down the measurements of each one because i have found that even though i am using the same pattern and the same sized needle AND the same ply wool (8ply) my sizing constantly changes depending on what the brand of wool is. i don't get it and it is very frustrating, :( i would have thought 8 ply was all the same size, but no.

So here goes: (a photo of each one)

acrylic longies (my son started wearing these when he was 1 and at 2 they still fit him, are just getting too short)
Waistband: 60 stitches (st) waist across: 29 cm
Bum: 15 rows Waist to crotch 26 cm
Legs 12 rows 60-90st Outside leg: 47 cm
Inside leg 22cm cuff 38 st

Utiku Longies (gemtime)Fits 18 months -2.5 yrs (getting abit short now)
Waistband: 91 stitches Waist across: 27cm
Bum: 15 rows Waist to crotch 26 cm
Legs:
14 rows 95-111stitches Outside leg: 49cm
Inside leg: 21cm

Image

Tekapo Longies (fit 9 - 18 months?)
Waistband: 87 stitches waist across: 26cm
Bum:
12 rows 90-97st waist to crotch 24cm
Legs: 13 rows Inside leg: 22cm
Outside leg: 48 cm

This sizing seems the same as the one above but i couldn't get this pair past my sons legs!!!! (they were for an Aria auction but i like to try them on DS first, to get an idea of fit)

Image

My lastest pair using merino (fit 2 yrs - 3?) Cleackheaton waist and cuffs. I have added a second cuff onto them (not in photo) it looks quite good with the double cuff tho. But sizing wise i added an extra row in the bum and in the legs and they are tighter in the bum than the gemtime and shorter! Just don't get it.

Waistband: 90 st Wasit across: 27cm
Bum 16 rows 88-110st Waist to crotch 25cm
Legs 14 rows Inside leg:27cm
Outside leg: 50cm

There are others but gives an idea maybe? sorry it's not knitting. But might help a crocheter out there?

Can anyone tell me what the Tiny Birds soaker size is like? I know it says over 12 months, but is she talking teeny baby or boomer like mine? Tommy's 10kg and I want something slightly bigger than the medium Punk Knitters soaker.
TIA! :D

I just knitted the Tiny birds one - I added a couple of extra rows in the crotch (and accidentally again in the back lol  ).

So from the top of the ribbing at the front measured thru the rise to the top of the ribbing it is 21inch

If you don't count the ribbing it is 18.5inch rise
Waist is 18cm unstretched, 24cm stretched. Fits my boys waist 42cm around when stretched and sits nicely (not too tight)

My boy is 9kg and it is quite large on him - should fit for aaaages. The waist tho fits perfectly (he has a vy small waist, so you might want to add stitches for the ribbing, I think Callum's godmother does a version of Tiny Birds with a bigger waist.

cast on 48 stitches, rib however many rows you want for waistband
knit 6 rows increasing on the end of each row
continue knitting straight until the front measures 15cm.
(I found the tinybirds waistband very tight for getting over night nappies so I start larger and put a tie in it. I don't make holes for the tie, just thread it thru the knitting with a small safety pin)

Then do the decrease for the legs - I decreased down to 23 stitches at the crutch and then always knit a few rows straight as I found the tiny birds a bit tight in the crutch.

If you have a nappy to measure it against it is easier!! then do the decreases for the back of the legs and knit the straight bit - I do a couple more rows on the back to the front but I also do 2 short rows before the decrease as well.

I knit the ribbed leg bands before sewing the soaker up.
DS 12yrs, DD 9yrs, and DS 6....

Hun I got some NB longies for Leo. He was 54cm born.
They measured 20cm leg length which was nearly perfect, perhaps slightly too long? Anywhere between 18 and 20cm?
The rise was 18cm (incl ribbing) which was a weeny bit short. 21cm would be best imho....
