Post by nzwildchik69 » Sun Jan 16, 2011 9:19 pm

i have been thinking and reading that maybe one of these months would be focused on making stuff for charity
i dont know anything about what charities, so what charities are out there that accept handmade things and what kind of stuff do they take :)

Beanies for Africa - http://www.facebook.com/babybeanies

Knitworld has promo'ed places wanting donations of knitted items - one for premies and one for puppy coats for winter puppies.

There is also theSouth Auckland Health Foundation / Middlemore hospital - baby clothes, blankets... http://www.sahf.org.nz/
Or the Wellington version http://www.whhf.org.nz/we-need-you-your ... verything/ (which has sewing and knitting pattern links)

There are groups like red cross etc, they seem to have their own knitting circle which then organises whether they will raffle/sell items or are giving them to a cause (eg: sending them to orphanages in other countries)

I can't knit, but if it's simple sewing then I'd be in

The two hospital ones listed above are looking for blankets (inlcuding fleece or very basic quilts) in as little as carseat size.

The Wellington one had measurements for various incubator covers, etc Which looked to my untrained eye to be mostly stitch and turn (specifically asked for no quilting as it can irritate little babies skin)

Spca - takes dog coats (although not sure about the tga one).

Salvation Army.

Our small Nicu unit still provides all its littlies with a hat and booties

There is also the organisation (sorry can't remeber the name) that always needs stuff for the little baskets for the angel babies.

Alternatively - we make stuff auction it and all proceeds go to one of our in need tnn children (ie Elijah) or to a relief fund (ie floods).

would be good to get going with this idea soon!

yeah! I would be happy to make something each month for a different cause. If it was a monthly focus thing it would keep me focused

A few years ago in Oz we made little possum pouches. They were knitted rectangles sewn together, with a cotton fabric lining.
Great fun - but now much use in Oz (cause we don't want to help the possums.... do we? 8-[ )

It would be cool to find out if there was anything we could make for a wildlife project - like kiwis or the like. I'm a soft touch for the animals, and often they are much more simple than making things for babies :)

After a loss in our family, I'm planning on knitting a baby blanket each month - total of 12 blankies, to donate to www.SANDS.org.nz

Yes thats the one I was trying to remember what they where called.

So should we all focus on a single charity a month or just spread the love and show what we have made and for who.

I would be all for starting February as The Minty Hospice Month, say March as SANDS, April as SPCA etc. Not saying that we have to in that order, but I like the idea of making one charity a focus.

that would be awesome! now we just need a list to spread out over 11 months and not to forget the smaller charities too :vibes:
each monthly charity drive should have info about them too eg.what size things need to be and what they dont like etc
